The City of Grand Island, Nebraska contracted with Benesch to expand 13th Street—a main east/west arterial—to a 41-foot, three-lane road with curb and gutter as well as five-foot sidewalks. The $2 Million in improvements to this corridor will not only facilitate transportation for all users but also bring the roadway into compliance with the complete street policy.
Benesch first helped the City evaluate 13th Street to define existing traffic operations, identify future operations and determine the best intersection traffic control measures. Besides adapting to the complete street policy, the design incorporated construction phasing in order to maintain access to properties along the corridor, including a daycare facility, apartments, commercial building and a potential residential subdivision. The end result is high quality design options which incorporate innovative corridor solutions. Unique features include an offset roundabout intersection to help manage traffic and fit within the context of the existing residential corridor. In addition, the project was designed to fit a three-lane roadway with sidewalks into an existing right-of-way while minimizing impacts to adjacent agricultural properties.
Prior to preliminary design, Benesch provided survey, geotechnical recommendations, utility coordination, traffic operations analysis and drainage analysis. The design took into consideration more than just widening the roadway. Other important design elements included storm drainage, ADA compliant ramps and pavement.
The project is slated for construction in the summer of 2018. During construction, Benesch will provide staking, construction observation and materials testing.
