Damen/Elston/Fullerton Intersection Utility Design

Chicago, IL

The intersection of Damen, Elston and Fullerton is one of the most heavily congested, accident-prone intersections in the City of Chicago. In addition to making roadway improvements, including an intersection re-route, 1,200 LF of new 16” watermain and 1,700 LF of new 12” watermain were designed for the reconfigured leg of the intersection on Elston Avenue, as well as 1,600 LF of combined sewers. The intersection re-route allows the City to construct new off-line sewers and eliminates the need to remove the existing junction chamber on Fullerton Avenue, which would have required a costly, three-year construction period.

Project highlights

  • Innovative re-route of two existing intersection legs to create three traditional intersections
  • Extensive coordination with Chicago Department of Water Management and Metropolitan Water Reclamation District
  • Design of 1,200 LF of new 16” watermain, 1,700 LF of new 12” watermain and 1,600 LF of combined sewers
