I-124 Reconstruction

Chattanooga, TN

Built in the late 1960’s, three interchanges along I-124 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, no longer provided the capacity to handle existing traffic volumes. Benesch was selected by the Tennessee Department of Transportation to study these three interchanges. Detailed traffic analyses of the interstate, ramps, weave areas and local streets were performed to determine the magnitude of the capacity constraints. Review of the existing roadway geometry was also performed to determine the locations which current design standards. In 2006, Benesch began working with TDOT to develop the design plans for the recommended improvements including major reconstruction of I-124 and significant redesign of all three study interchanges. As part of these plans nine Bridge Preliminaries were developed for the bridge structures through this section.
