The existing deteriorated precast concrete beam superstructure is being completely replaced with a Prefabricated Bridge Unit (PBU) superstructure as a means of Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC). The entire superstructure along this busy, central Connecticut corridor will be replaced in two major stages, each taking place within 56-hour weekend work windows. During these allowable periods, Cedar Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction. The complex design includes the incorporation of specialized post-tensioning details required to maintain traffic on the remaining precast beams after partial removal is completed. Other challenges included accommodating the raised roadway profile without impacting the adjacent bridge structures. Services were provided under Benesch’s CTDOT Task Order Bridge Rehabilitation and Replacement Program contract.
