Benesch provided the design for a key 1-mile section of Route 128 included the following components: highway widening with the addition of 2 through lanes at the median and NB and SB outside auxiliary lanes between University Avenue and I-95 Interchange; widening and realignment of SB ramp to I-95; realignment of NB off ramp and SB on-ramp at University Avenue; traffic management in six stages to provide for 167,000 ADT traffic; replacement and widening of the University Ave., MBTA/Amtrak and Neponset River bridges; highway drainage design and water quality BMP’s that included creation of six wetland detention ponds and a water quality biofilter swale; MSE walls and geogrid reinforced earth slopes to minimize widening and side slope impacts to wetlands and Neponset River ACEC; Replacement of Amtrak/MBTA catenary structures in vicinity of bridge; and preparation of plans, specifications, estimates and environmental documentation and public hearings for permitting.
