Springwells Water Treatment Plant

Detroit, MI

The Springwells Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is one of the largest plants in the Detroit Water & Sewerage Department’s (DWSD) system. Established in 1958, the filters at the facility were in need of replacement. Benesch was attained by DWSD to provide structural design services for the filter building’s rehabilitation and improvements to other auxiliary facilities on at the site. The design scope of the project included structural repair and restoration inside the filters, as well as repairs and restoration of the settled water conduits, stop gate chamber, filter manifolds and filtered water conduits. As one of the DWSD’s larger WTP facilities, maintaining continuous operation was critical to the success of the project’s design.
