Detroit Water and Sewerage Department

Springwells Water Treatment Plant

Detroit, MI

As one of the largest plants in the Detroit Water & Sewerage Department’s (DWSD) system, the Springwells Water Treatment Plant (WTP) housed several filters. After more than 50 years of use, these dated filters had reached the end of their functional life and needed to be replaced.

Benesch provided structural design services for the filter building’s rehabilitation and improvements to other auxiliary facilities at the site. Design also included structural repair and restoration inside the filters, as well as repairs and restoration of the settled water conduits, stop gate chamber, filter manifolds and filtered water conduits.

The rehabilitation was not only successful, but was completed while maintaining continuous operation.
